President’s Message- April 2019

Happy April!

And just like that we have sprung from winter into spring! Flowers are blooming, and the trees are green once again. Before we know it, summer will be upon us. When the seasons change, I often take time to reflect on the past. As far as CCSHRM goes, I’ve found myself returning to our recent Workplace Conference event.

The event itself was a great time to meet and assist many of the Human Resources professionals in our area and went off without a hitch. However, what I continue to reflect on is the wonderful team work exhibited by our volunteers who made the event truly come alive. So, thank you once again to everyone who volunteered and participated in our event. Nothing great is ever done alone, it always “takes a village” as the old saying goes.

Successful businesses operate in the same fashion, they embody a culture of team work from the top to bottom. Keeping with the spring theme, the successful functioning of a business can be compared to a garden. In order for flowers or plants to flourish in a garden everything has to be just right. The soil needs to be rich with minerals for the roots to grow, sunlight is needed, and water must be provided. With all of these things and a little luck, a garden can truly flourish.

When we think about Human Resources, we often get bogged down in the details of the duties that face us. However, in my opinion, HR is so much more than that. The word “resource” stems from a Latin word meaning; “to rise”, if we briefly consider this root along with our analogy, HR ensures that the workplace is raised from a seed to a thriving plant. We shape the workplace from the ground up and ultimately it falls on us to build a culture of success and team work within our respective workplaces.

Cheers to all of you and your hard work!
